I'm not sure if anyone else has posted a pattern for these online, and today I was bored at work and fiddled with my hook, some cotton, and the plastic throw away ring from widemouthed drink bottles (e.g. for smoothies, etc).
I am posting the picture in the photo section, and the pattern is thus:
H Hook
Peaches and cream cotton
Plastic ring
Ch 6, joining last to first ch to create loop. Dc 1, ch 1 repeat until you have 10 dc in ring.
Placing the plastic ring in front of your work, work one slip stitch to fasten your work to the plastic ring. Work 1 sc in space between dc, fastening stitch to the ring. Ch 1. Repeat working one sc between space (fastening to ring) and chaining 1 until you get to your first stitch on the ring.
Weave in ends.

That is so cool. Another way to "recycle"! And what a great way to make buttons.
If worked in a crochet "thread," you can also string small beads onto it and work the beads into the button, too.
