For The Next Scrumble I Receive

I received some vintage Wintuk from a Freecycler yesterday (do they even make Wintuk anymore?), and this purple really speaks to me.

I know the yarn wants to be worked a bit more in this scrumble, but I don't want to overdo it, as I want to graft this onto the next scrumble I receive, and then "hit the ground running" with whatever else strikes my fancy.

So I'm not a Knit-iot, Afterall...

Conversational nugget from today's lunch meeting w/a gal who runs knitting clinics out of her home:

She: I know you crochet, but do you also knit?
Me: I learned to knit before I got into crochet. The most complicated things I did were all improvised since I couldn't follow patterns. But I've worked with circs; I've done basket weave dishcloths; and at one point got into intarsia, even designed a long, alpine ski hat for a cousin, wherein, using intarsia, I spelled out the word "ho ho ho" all over it.
She: Those are complicated things, not a beginner!

It was reassuring to me to hear another person say this, as I tend to denigrate my knitting.

I think with a little positivity and guideance, I could build up my confidence and skills with my knitting.

I think it was kizmet that there was one, solitary pair of dpns in that stuff I got from Freecycle. I think I could get into making a pair of socks.

Freecycle Booty: First Installment

Here's a sampling of the artsy tools I received this week
from a fellow Freecycler.

In the cup are:

• Two granny squares worked in crochet cotton
• A set of four DPNs
• One steel crochet hook, size "0"
• One BONE crochet hook, size unknown, perhaps a 1
• One pair (of two) of nylon circs
• A sampling of rug needles
• And a rug hooking "gun"

Tonight I might play around with scanning some
of the vintage Vogue Knitting mags and/or
play around with some patterns.
I found one for a crocheted beret.
Mood: Giddy.

Freecycle: Treasure Trove of Knit & Crochet Kitsch

I finally got around to lugging inside a Hefty bag full of "assorted knit and crochet stuff" I picked up from a Freecycler on Friday.

It is a VIRTUAL TREASURE TROVE of vintage Vogue Knitting magazines from roughly 1964 through the 1970s, as well as an assortment of pattern books, pattern clippings, and of course TOOLS!

In this bag was a bevvy of knitting needles (including two nylon circs, as well as one complete set of dpns), rug hooking needles, a scant few crochet hooks; however one hook appears to be crafted out of BONE.

It's fun imagining the person behind the things of interest in the bag. Rug hooking. Crochet. Knit. Macrame. Embroidery. Quite a lot of interests! I especially enjoyed finding one solitary set of double pointed knitting needles--looks like the original owner attempted sock

I'm much more of a crocheter than knitter, so I'll be picking out one or two sets of knitting needles to keep, and will pass on the rest to Interim House in Philadelphia, which uses knit and crochet art therapy as part of a drug and alcohol rehab program.

Eventually, I would like to scan into PDF a few of the patterns that strike my fancy, so I won't end up destroying the books, which are bordering on 40 years old in some cases.

Needless to say, I'll be blogging quite a bit about each little discovery I find in these pattern books, photographing the results... but not before I show off a picture of the petite little hook done in bone.
